Mike Greenberg is confirmed to take the helm as the new host of the popular “Sunday Football Countdown” show, readying for a significant broadcast event scheduled for 2027, according to insider reports released on Tuesday by The Athletic.
Greenberg steps in to replace Sam Ponder, who was let go last week despite having over one million dollars and a year left on her contract. Although Ponder’s contract will be honored in full, her departure aligns with broader financial adjustments ahead of the fiscal year closing in late September.
This strategic move marks a promotion for Greenberg, a well-regarded figure within the broadcasting community. Already a prominent figure from his roles in the daily “Get Up” on television and “Greeny” on radio, Greenberg’s influence extends across various segments of the network. Previously, he briefly led NBA coverage before transitioning those responsibilities to Malika Andrews last season. He is also the face of the prestigious annual NFL Draft coverage.
The choice of Greenberg over Laura Rutledge, a rising star within the network, underlines his established presence. Rutledge, currently hosting the daily “NFL Live,” was a notable candidate but did not secure the role.
Earlier, Scott Van Pelt was appointed as the host for the Monday night football countdown program, which was revamped to include Jason Kelce, Marcus Spears, and Ryan Clark after the departure of Robert Griffin III.
The new Sunday lineup under Greenberg’s leadership will feature notable analysts such as Randy Moss, Tedy Bruschi, Rex Ryan, Alex Smith, and insider Adam Schefter.
With major broadcasting plans on the horizon, including a significant 2027 event, the network is strategically positioning its programming and personnel to maximize its impact and viewership in this landmark event in sports history.
