The rivalry between Olympic champion Noah Lyles and NFL star Tyreek Hill escalated this week, following new comments from Lyles. Having recently secured a gold medal in the 100-meter dash at the Paris Olympics, Lyles addressed Hill’s challenge, stipulating that any race would need to adhere to professional standards.

Lyles expressed his openness to a race, provided it meets certain criteria. “If there’s a sponsor for the event, we’re racing for substantial prize money, on a professional track, over 100 meters, then I’m all in,” Lyles stated during a Wednesday interview with NBC News.

He emphasized the need for authenticity in the competition. “This isn’t about stunts. You’re up against someone who has dedicated his life to becoming the fastest man alive. Excelling in football doesn’t automatically qualify you to skip ahead in track,” Lyles added.

The tension between the two athletes started after Hill responded negatively to Lyles’ critique of American sports leagues labeling their champions as “world champions.” The dispute gained more attention following Hill’s remarks on a podcast where he questioned Lyles’ integrity after a bronze medal performance and a bout with COVID-19.

Hill has been vocal about his capabilities, suggesting he could outpace Lyles in a 50-yard dash. “I’d edge out Noah Lyles, not by much, but I would win,” Hill claimed.

However, Lyles reiterated that any challenge would have to be in his domain—the 100 meters. “I’m not interested in trivial challenges. If you’re serious about challenging the fastest man, it has to be on my terms, in my event,” he told NBC News.

Lyles also mentioned NFL wide receiver DK Metcalf, who attempted to bridge the gap between football speed and track by competing in a 100-meter event. Lyles commended Metcalf for his genuine effort to measure up in track, contrasting it with others who might not be as earnest.

Metcalf participated in the USATF Golden Games in 2021, clocking 10.36 seconds in the 100-meter dash, which was below the Olympic trial qualifying standard of 10.05 seconds.

This ongoing dialogue between Lyles and Hill underscores not just a clash of athletic prowess but also the distinct cultures surrounding track and field and professional football.
